Mula Bandha: Root Lock
The Sanskrit word mula means “root” and this bandha is universally acknowledged as being of great importance in yoga. However, authorities do not seem to agree fully as to the exact technique to be used. There may be some difficulties translating the terms used. Some texts refer to mula bandha an “anal lock”, which is confusing because there is another lock called ashwini mudra (the horse seal) which involves the contraction of the anal sphincter but is different from mulu lxindha. In the Astanga yoga Primary Series we are told that mula bandha should be contracted throughout the entire prac tice (if you try to contract the anal sphincter and execute forward bend, it is virtually impossible to hold. Other authorities describe mulo bandha as a contraction of the permeal area and, as this is my understanding of the bandha, have described it in more detail below.

Mula bandha consists of the lifting of the pelvic floor muscles. The result is a feeling of core strength in the body and of mental and physical lighness. “Perineum” is the term used to describe the whoLe diamond-shaped area of the pelvic floor (see the illustrations on page 37). It is formed of two triangles that are joined by a line between the sitting bones (ischial tuberosities). It is also the term used for the small fibro-muscular nodule at the middle of the pelvic floor into which several muscles insert. ft is this area — specifically the central tendon of the perineum — that you need to lift in mule bandha
